    Yeah, it might be easier to do it that way round, get a VHS/DVD recorder combo (with a hard drive too if you want more editing flexibility etc.) and burn your videos to DVD as your primary "archive". Then you can get software and rip those DVDs as video files using your computer then store them on an external hard drive as a kind of backup.
