I know this is tangential to the original post, but I really like the Canaries. The volcanic landscapes and proximity to Africa give them something a bit different to your average British/German holiday resort, but still with plenty of trashy resort stuff on tap if that's what you're after. Anyway, we generally go to Lanzarote (specifically Costa Teguise) because it's a bit quieter, but will definitely pop in to the aforementioned bar if we're on that side of Tenerife again.
