  2. That was beautiful. All the more so for being so avoidable.
  3. Tom Waits next, on Christmas Day, just to curl one final turd onto the dinner plate that is 2016.

  5. Hey, what have I done to deserve that?
  6. I'm obviously concerned about the impact it might have on friends there - one is a gay Muslim who fled the Bosnian war in the assumption that the US would be a safer place - but you have to think and hope that the structures of government will de-fang Trump somewhat (and just wait and see what happens with his more rabid supporters in the meantime). Otherwise there's nowt you can do really - America's always going to be a bit different and a bit more shooty - and while ridiculing the electorate is part of the problem that led us here in the first place, ridiculing and finding gallows humour in the absurdity of the situation is totally valid and pretty much how I deal with everything in life anyway, so bring it on.

  9. I've already put money on Le Pen to win in France if anyone fancies a natter about that.
  10. Yeah, imagine the Brexit vote had been constituency-based instead and you got a different result with each system. Actually, maybe don't. Anyway, it's good to know there's always a local angle on these things: http://www.buchanobserver.co.uk/news/aberdeenshire-business-owner-wins-presidential-election-1-4282745
  11. As a side note, looks like Clinton might well win the popular vote, like Gore did in 2000. Not that you can read too much into that if you assume people in safe states are far less inclined to vote, blablabla, but still.
  12. I also think it's worth not overstating the nature of the "movement" too much. A small shift in the other direction and you have President Romney four years ago, a small shift in the other direction and you have a Remain win, and so on - these things are often fairly finely balanced, and it's not as if the US/UK populations would have had a fundamentally different make-up if those had been the outcomes, you're still talking a broad split down the middle (like a lot of the time in modern-day US anyway). It's just the post-Brexit problem of a narrow victory in a polarised vote being spun into a blanket statement of uniform intent, and obviously any system that's a de facto referendum like a US presidential election is susceptible to negative rather than positive voting. Reading too much into people's thoughts is therefore perhaps to be avoided. But I have no idea really. tl;dr version
  13. Can we all just take a moment to focus on the most terrifying consequence of this result, namely Parky being right about something?
  14. I've had my safety bet on him for about 45 minutes now, at least. Not that money is going to be worth anything after this.
  15. Haha, wait a minute, here we go. The Brexit narrative is unfolding...
  16. There's shaking things up and there's throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
  17. German knows lots of words. German has the best words.
  18. I spent four years getting a degree in this language and I can assure you it's really very difficult.
  19. I don't know why we can't just Brexit. We took back control. Now let's just Brexit. BREXIT!
  20. And now they're getting what they wanted. Doesn't sound like we're taking that direction much.
  21. When a dangerous idiot is threatening to become leader of the free world, what you really want is a supine media.
