To me it mirrors the oft-quoted "people would vote for the Greens if it was all about the policies". It's one thing to agree with the principles in theory and quite another to vote for them in practice. Also, if it's accepted that Trump's victory was due partly to hammering Hillary as "crooked" over and over again until enough people bought into the message, imagine what he'd have done with a progressive socialist like Sanders. The poor bugger would have been firmly on the wrong side of the buzzword war.

Even if the pendulum swings back - and it's an open question as we face the impact of human-induced overcrowding, resource scarcity and environmental meltdown, quite aside from piffling social factors like politics and religious conflict - I wouldn't necessarily reckon on it happening within my lifetime. Looks like I picked the wrong decade to quit drinking.

It's not even that his approval rating fell below 50% (I don't think it was ever above it), it's that his disapproval rating climbed above 50%. (EDIT: Wait, you said that, but also the opposite. Anyways.) But I agree, there's no reason to think he's in any danger considering most of the people condemning him are the ones who've been condemning him all along anyway. He still managed to get elected despite that, so...

I tell them I'm still pretty busy with learning to understand the people who don't like facts, the people who don't like Romanian grocery stores and the people who don't want me to have equal rights but I'll get to this 2017 iteration of "Hindenburg was responsible for the Holocaust" as soon as I've got a bit of spare time.
