  1. Concrete is a myth.
  2. Just back from a week and a bit in Lanzarote, Playa de los Pocillos this time, first time I'd been. Really nice villa five minutes' walk from amenities and a massive beach, convenient for the airport and the trashier parts of Puerto del Carmen without being close enough for the noise pollution from either to be a problem.
  3. Just got trapped on a train with a 72-year-old plasma energy/big science truther on her way back from a conference on telepathy and human heart aura energy at a farm in the South Downs.
  4. Second semi-final tonight folks, BBC FOUR at 8pm. We've got yodel-rap, Irish twinks, Belarusian folksters and a fat Croatian man doing a bilingual popera duet with himself. All quite standard.
  5. They present the German votes from the Reeperbahn every year, accompanied by a public viewing of the show and some "live" music before and after. Never especially appealed to me, but you know the Germans and their organised fun.
  6. I've been to saunas like that
  7. As if one-tenth of them will actually vote.
  8. Varoufakis is an absolute chancer, mind.
  9. I have no reason to believe he understands or wants to understand why he was elected in the first place - not as the great Corbyn, but because of precisely what he isn't - so I don't buy that he has anywhere near enough self-awareness to grasp what a local election massacre mght actually mean in the wider sense. I suppose we'll soon find out...

  11. Remember how convinced the internet was that Darren Ambrose and Will Young were an item? We're still a long way from where we need to be.
  12. I'm starting to think Corbyn won't walk even if they end up with <150 seats.
  13. They're French, they all want to shag their granny, they can relate.
  14. But we have such innovative cake...
  15. The fact that I'm even thinking to myself "...still can't imagine Corbyn leading the negotiations though" probably speaks volumes for how the election is going to turn out despite the above clusterfuck.
  16. I'm sure it's all just willy-waving. Or fanny-flailing. We've never grasped the notion of compromise politics here, our parliament isn't geared towards it and we've always harboured an instinctive distrust of those mainland Europeans with their semi-circular parliamentary chambers and their weak-willed coalitions and all. Now might be a useful time to start understanding how they actually think.
  17. Ended up watching a few Kermode favourites recently, more by accident than design. Pan's Labyrinth didn't grip me like I expected it to, but then I was watching it in SD. Pride was a surprisingly cheery fable considering everyone ultimately loses and/or dies, but I suppose that's very British in its own way. Chicken is quiet and terrific, so I'll give the flappy-handed man that one. I'm home alone next week so there'll probably be more of this shit to come.

  19. A cabbie-endorsed tax fiddler? Surely not.
  20. Specifically in the context of entering into a coalition with Labour in its current form (as well as the Tories), I think, because he can't support either party's position on (extreme) Brexit. So helping get another Brexit critic like Lucas re-elected is consisent with that, I suppose. EDIT: Plus it was a local party decision, apparently. Not sure how much power they have vs. the mighty Tim at the end of the day, but it would seem churlish of him to overrule.
