We have no right to be where we are with our defense. Simpson and Williamson are barely good enough for the bench. We did have quite a bit of luck first 10 games though, there is no way around it. Came away with probably 8-9 points more than what we really deserved.

It takes more than a EL run to fundamentally change a clubs position, Fulham nearly won the entire thing and they went fuck all places really.

I think the question that needs to be asked is if Mike will DEMAND european fotball. Will he? Neither us or him expected this, we deserve to be a big club but for success in the long term we need a better defense. If we get that I can see us qualifying again, but my point is that it takes alot of fun out of the fotball worrying about European fotball all the time. We can back up 2 years ago so Im not quite there yet, for now I will just enjoy the ride.

Sure, but we needed a bigger squad anyway - so were were always going to strengthen in the summer. With european fotball now becoming a reality, thanks to carroll we have the money to sign 1-2 extra players for that. Add to that we have Marveaux coming back, Abeid and ferguson rising through the ranks as well as perch gosling and guthrie, all we really need is the defense having a good look at. I see no downsides really We are making this a bigger deal than it has to be, Everton Stoke Fulham etc have all been in european fotball previous seasons and Im sure they enjoyed it. Mike knows that if he wants european fotball again, he will have to invest in/keep the squad - so its all up to him.

We may never win anything, but for me its all about the journey - not arriving. Very few clubs manage or even intend to keep all their best players. There will always be a draft through the club unless you are Barcelona. Even arsenal lost Clichy, Fabregas and Nasri this summer. Life goes on,it doesnt mean the owner wants to destroy the club. There is some Carroll money left, but it doesnt mean we will or should spunk it all at once. When you get your salary, do you go out and buy food for a month straight away? If we lose Tiote this summer for 25 million and proceed to spend 20 million on a CB, a LB and a few 19-20 year old midfielders from Ligue 1 thats a stronger squad in my book - and thats what matters. There are definately better owners out there who care far more about the fotballing side of things. But there are worse ones too, like Venkys etc. or the QPR owners even though their intentions are good. There is a big risk in signing up loads of players on 80 grand a week. Mikes strategy have worked, yes. But what IS mikes strategy? Spend little money and hope they will come good? We have built a quality side for peanuts, whether we keep it is another question. For now, everything is rosy though. Credit to Mike, especially for Cisse in the january window. Good buy that. We will have to wait over the summer, if we keep all the bodies and get a few defenders in - Ill doff my cap.
