They weigh up the pros and cons and make intelligent decisions. In this instance they probably would have looked to cover the space the lad was running into, not jump in with all guns blazing. The five and half year deal thing is a double edged sword. On the plus side it reduces the chances of players running down their contracts and being sold for below their ‘real’ value. On the down side if they get seriously injured or just have a permanent loss of form you’re stuck with them. Ben Arfa only signed for four and half years, which suggests he’s not as committed to NUFC as the other players who have signed contracts recently. Vukic has it all to prove.

We have two young players who have come through the youth system in the last few years who are clearly good enough for the Premier League (neither of which were brought to the club under Ashley’s regime) after that the cupboard is more or less bare. Ranger, Kadar and Vukic have been much hyped but only one of them has been good enough to challenge for a first team spot this season and he looked like a plank last night. Newcastle’s youth policy is no better than any other clubs. We are buying younger players on the basis of them retaining resale value, because it's the cheap option. Arsenal don’t do this, they pay big fees and pay top wages to secure the services of the world’s best young players. We are just scraping around looking for bargains, players who are available on the cheap because they have fallen out with their clubs. Emulating Arsenal? Swallowing the bullshit more like.

Marcus Stewart? I get your point like but Carroll's obviously got more talent than he did, first season form aside. He's come up against some of the best centre halves in Europe this season and made them into ghosts but he's good on the deck as well and has a bit of skill. His improvement has been scary and I think he'll be a top centre forward for a good while. Aye, that him. CG is missing the point. It’s relatively easy to make good defenders look like ghosts once, but next time they come up against AC they’ll have first hand experience of his game, have a better knowledge of his strengths and weaknesses. It’ll be interesting to see how he gets on during the second half of the season.

Got to say I think Carroll is being overhyped at the moment. He’s playing well and has a lot of potential but he’s still an unknown quantity to most Premier League defences, and a type of player most of them haven’t faced for years if ever. All it will take is for one team to come up with tactic for dealing with him and his effectiveness will be greatly diminished. I’m playing devil’s advocate but it’s not uncommon for PL ‘virgins’ to over perform in their first season. That lad from Ipswich who’s name I forget being a good example. Banged in loads of goals in his first season, was shit in his second and ended up at Sunderland.
