Rafa, Mandy. Given the shite we've been served up recently, this is the most positive it's been possible to have been post-Ashley and more than any of us could have hoped for. That's depressing in its own right and you've every right to be as negative as you like fwiw.

Doesn't change the fact that how other teams do is of utmost relevance to how Newcastle do. As for the path we're going down, I think we can all agree that .16ppg means mackem-level relegation, but a larger and more relevant sample would be the 1ppg achieved since the start of the season. That's right on the cusp of what's needed. It's going to be a long, hard season without pretty serious investment in January but we knew that.

Even understanding that Rafa values the system (and players that can follow it best) over individuals, the decision to go with Diamé is baffling. He's either completely devoid of ability/confidence/both so he puts him into a team low on confidence who are going to be up against it for >85 mins?

It'll be a long auld slog I think. I'm a lot more comfortable with superstar training but am currently just doing a rookie season (which is way too easy but lets me get a feel for the team/pitch dynamics). I haven't put many hours in either as I've been particularly irritable this last week or so.

The gulf in quality is depressing but the manner of the defeat is even more so. Merino and Diamé spent most of their time on the pitch having a competition as to who could give the ball away in a more dangerous position and it wasn't good percentage balls forward that Merino was conceding possession with. Can't recall anyone but Darlow coming out of that game looking competent. Murphy could be a very decent player with the right coaching.
