I was talking to a young male American friend of mine, and they do seem genuinely confused about where the line is. I really enjoyed both, and think it's by far the best thing Theroux's done (who I've always been on the fence about). I probably benefited by having no former knowledge of either documentary. Ironically Rathbun accuses him at one point of constantly asking inane questions and wanting him to ask the really nitty gritty shit that he wants to know. This was my problem with Theroux's early stuff (ie. when interviewing the Grand Dragon of the Klan). But he got into the stuff with Rathbun that I was really left wanting to know after the HBO one. Rathbun is a fascinating character and the closest thing we have to understanding the inner workings of Scientology. So the film was in large part about him.
