Middlesbrough: worst town in England
smoggeordie replied to Dr Kenneth Noisewater's topic in General Chat
Nice sidestep to avoid offending me TBF, even areas of Nunthorpe are shite. I wouldn't like to walk the streets when it's dark in my area like. And it's where all the rich twats live! Hate Teesside with a passion. -

Choose the St James's Park run-out anthem

Local Hero still the fans’ home banker Oct 16 2007 by Chloe Griffiths, The Journal THE search for the definitive Newcastle United anthem gathered pace yesterday as The Journal was inundated with responses from fans. Scores of readers emailed, texted or went online to vote for the song the black-and-whites should run out to. And the overwhelming majority of fans who have voted so far want the Magpies once again to emerge on the pitch to Newcastle-born Mark Knopfler’s guitar classic Local Hero. Supporters believe it has become synonymous with the pride and passion of the fans and the club. But earlier this season, the 1983 classic was sidelined by club officials who said they wanted to introduce a new number to “improve the atmosphere” at the ground. They opted for If the Kids Are United, by London punk band Sham 69, because of its upbeat ending, a chant of “United, United”. But the switch received a mixed response from followers, many of whom were dismayed to lose the long-standing anthem. So now The Journal is giving all Magpie fans the chance to choose the song they believe will best galvanise the crowd. And the club have promised to listen, insisting they want to find the perfect Magpie anthem, whether it be one of those two or The Blaydon Races. We want all readers to write, text, or go online to chose their preference. By last night – just hours after our poll was launched – we had received almost 200 votes. Local Hero is already miles ahead with 165 votes, against 12 for The Blaydon Races and just four for If the Kids Are United. Seven people voted not to have an anthem at all. Season ticket holder Heather Wales, of Gateshead, was right behind Local Hero. She wrote: “The hairs on the back of my neck used to stand up every time the players ran out on to the pitch when Local Hero came on. “Why on earth they felt they had to change it is beyond me. I want to enter my vote to bring back Local Hero.” Streams of fans also logged on to our website journallive.co.uk to register their vote, with Local Hero also taking pole position. A Newcastle United spokesman said: “We hear a lot of different opinions from fans. People are quite divided – some like Local Hero, others would like to hear The Blaydon Races, while some say they don’t want any music at all so the crowd can build the atmosphere. “We are keen to hear from fans so we can get the best formula and ensure the atmosphere at St James’s is as good as it always is.” -

.cock ALAN Shearer says that he cannot understand why big pal Michael Owen has been criticised for wanting to get back playing and scoring goals for club and country. The 27-year-old underwent stomach surgery over two weeks ago and declared himself fit for the Magpies clash with Everton just eight days later, the United No.10 coming from the bench to score the all-important third in a 3-2 victory. And Geordie legend Shearer, who knows Owen better than most, insists that the former Real Madrid ace is loving life on Tyneside with his wife and children settled in the area. "He's very happy here - he's come out and said it numerous times," Big Al told Newcastle World TV after scoring a hat-trick in the Princes Trust Challenge Trophy at St.James' Park on Sunday. "He loves the area - his family's here and his kids are at school. "He can't control what's been said, and he can't come out every week. He's happy, and he shouldn't have to do that. "He's frustrated, but he's a tough lad. He'll handle it, and he'll score goals." Owen travels to Russia this week with the Three Lions for their crunch Euro 2008 Qualifier in Moscow having played 70 minutes of Saturday's 3-0 victory over Estonia at Wembley. And Shearer says that he cannot see the crime in a player wanting to get back in action as quickly as possible following injury. "I don't understand how it's such a crime to first of all get back to playing for Newcastle," he added. "I know Sam said he was fit to start the game (against Everton), and Michael said he was fit to start the game. He came on and scored, and did very well. "He wants to play for England, and I don't see the crime in that. "I don't understand where the criticism's coming from."

Former England boss Kevin Keegan says he is unlikely to manage a team again. Keegan, 56, stepped down from his last job as Manchester City manager in March 2005 and now runs interactive football attraction Soccer Circus in Glasgow. "I don't think it will happen," he told BBC One's Inside Sport. "I think my life has gone in a different direction. "You never know, I mean I do get offers to go back into football, but I made a decision that I would come and do something different with my life." He added: "I mean I haven't watched a game of football, I mean live, since my last game at Manchester City and I can't even remember what game that was now." Keegan went into management after a glorious playing career with, among others, Liverpool and Hamburg, which earned him four league titles, a European Cup, two European Footballer of the Year awards and 63 caps. He became Newcastle boss in 1992 and spent five rollercoaster years there before spells with Fulham, England and Manchester City. Keegan was linked with a return to Newcastle in the summer as director of football after lifelong Magpies fan Mike Ashley took control of the club. Manager Sam Allardyce was reportedly unhappy at the prospect but Keegan says he would never go back to St James' Park in that capacity. "It's absolutely impossible to give Sam Allardyce a job at Newcastle and then go and fetch someone who is going to be some sort of threat, it doesn't work," said Keegan. "Sam would be a fool to let it happen and the guy who goes in would be a fool to accept it. "The chairman, who is not a fool, would be a fool to go and do it, too. It doesn't work." Keegan, who led Newcastle to second place in the Premier League in 1996, also believes the monopoly Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have had on the top four places is bad for the English game. He said: "It's very difficult to get into the top four. Why? Because the money they get from being there keeps them away from the others down there. "So when you are at the smaller clubs or even some of the bigger clubs that aren't in there, it's about how you get in - it's very very difficult, as Newcastle and Man City have found out. "Everyone says there are the top four and they are one league and then there's another league. "You have got the people fighting to get in, that's the way I see it, that has been the big change."
