🎶 Working on the site Making up tales of shite That's mackems alright (That's mackems alright) Then copying wor flags Slagging off the mags That's mackems alright (That's mackems alright) Working all day For a pittance of pay Then blow it all on Saturday night And you tell tall tales But you don't know their names That's mackems alright. Working in the sun Drinking pop having fun That's mackems alright (That's mackems alright) Then a shite in the stand Spreadin' it around That's mackems alright (That's mackems alright) Fixed your seat all day For your owner you say? And sneak a cheese slice back to the wife Still you keep a little here To go with your free pint of beer That's mackems alright Yeah you play the game Then it's auf wiedersehen That's mackems alright (That's mackems alright) Telling the lie With a glint in your eye, 'Cause tomorrow you'll be back on the RTG site And you tell tall tales But you don't know their names That's mackems alright Yeah you play the game Then it's auf wiedersehen That's mackems alright (That's mackems alright) 🎵21 points

Not my experience unfortunately. I did a tour of the San Siro recently. The tour guide asked which club I supported. I said "Newcastle" with a grin on my face. He just looked puzzled. "Kevin Keegan, Bobby Robson, Alan Shearer". He was still not getting it. "Oh ffs, Sandro Tonali, we've just played Milan in the champions league? " He was Still scoobied, and asked me whereabouts Newcastle was. I told him the NE of England. "Ahhhh" he says "Vicino Sunderland?L'argomento di Netflix? Il black cats! Jack Ross, Phil Parkinson, Simon Grayson? Il Loch Ness Drogba! Founders of Athletico Bilbao! Mamma Mia! Il Sunderland è una squadra di calcio enorme. Forza Sunderlando!!! Gutted, tbh.20 points

I was talking to my Dad last night. I knew he knew the fella who did the NUFC blog as he’d mentioned it ages ago. My dad would read the blog from time to time and had seen the recent post announcing it was closing down. Anyway, it turns out they lived close to each other in Walker and were in the same class at high school (Heaton Tech as was). They both played for Newcastle Boys for several seasons. My dad was a centre half and said that Ed Harrison was an excellent ‘fearless’ goalkeeper. Ed played in a trial match for England schoolboys so he must’ve been pretty decent. My dad said Ed did a degree at King’s College London, before doing a masters up here. And he must’ve subsequently got a doctorate. That would’ve been highly unusual for a working class lad from Walker back then when hardly anyone would’ve stayed on beyond 16, let alone go to uni. Their paths crossed a bit through the years as my dad had various jobs in IT and Ed ended up working for IBM, which saw him move to North Carolina, where he is now. My dad reckons Ed is a lovely fella. Anyway, sorry for the boring, humourless story with no swearing20 points

I think I'm going to end every sentence with "...& of course the Genocide" from now on. Love the way he drops it in there. "My favourite teams? Newcastle, Mainz, Norrköping, Stenhousemuir & of course the Genocide." "I'll have the lamb jalfrezi, pilau rice, garlic naan & of course the Genocide."19 points

Today I was eating at home with my father. We watched the first half of the game together in the living room (where I have a TV with the station to watch football) and, at half-time, we went to eat in the kitchen. I took a little longer than the 15 minute break, so when I returned to the room, we were already losing 1-3. My father, meanwhile, has been left washing the dirty dishes. Good. Well, around the 70th minute, more or less, he went to see how the game was going. He has seen that 1-3 and has gotten a little lost... But no. He came back every 2-3 minutes to see how we were doing and every time he came we scored. In the end, he has left the kitchen half-cleaned and has come to watch the final minutes, just to check Barnes' last arrow. Yes friends. My father is already a Newcastle fan.19 points

They really are in their own little "we're man united" ego fuelled bubble aren't they? Ratcliffes statement made no fucking sense, that comparison to pep was actual nonsense like anyone in football just lets their players wander off for free when they don't want to be at the club anymore. His very own Man United wouldn't even sack Mason Greenwood because they thought they could get a fee for him somewhere down the line the cunts. "We had a very grown-up conversation with Manchester City about Omar" Why didn't you do that with us then you dickhead? Instead you contacted Ashworth and fluttered your eyelashes at him through your media mates and now want to act all precious when we turn around and tell you that thats actually not acceptable and we'll either have our fee or you can wait. Their fans keep going on about this being "small time" which makes no sense either, surely the small time thing would be for us to bend over "oh yes mr man united please, please take the technical director we hired less than two years ago, would you like anything else sir" Its either that or "This is exactly what they did to brighton". No, we approached Brighton first, who gave us permission to talk to Ashworth then placed him on gardening leave until a deal was made. Which is how this should have been done. I'd started hating Man U less over the last few years, they were more of a laughing stock than anything else, but the sheer ENTITLEMENT of everyone on their side over this, pure brexit-style british exceptionalism has reminded me how much I despise that club.18 points

Well. I think it's time to analyze the game, already cold. I'll start with the best. Do you know what it is? I think Bruno played a fairly normal game, turning bad. He did not stand out too much except in some very showy long delivery. If we play like this, and Bruno wasn't at his highest level... Ufff. And be careful, because I think that Villa is a very good team that will surely be Top 8 in the League and that last year already made it difficult for us. We made 5, but if it wasn't for Dibu Martínez, it could have been 7 or 8. We saw Villa's mistakes and we knew how to do damage by pressing their ball out and destroying their defensive line so far forward. Fantastic defensive line. The 4 of last year (plus Pope). This can only get better. Stronger, more compact. Incredible. Of course, I think we need to sign a defender for when Schar or Botman are not there. The season, with 4 competitions, is very long. Joelinton-Bruno-Tonali. That has to be the starting MC in important matches. Joelinton is no longer just a Box to Box who runs, fights and steals. He now understands and distributes, he knows when to pass long and short, he knows how to move around the midfield seeking to associate with everyone. Knowing how Howe understands the game, this team has to be Joelinton and 10 others. Tonali made a sensational debut scoring right out of the gate and that makes everything easier for him. I think he is a player who does not shine in goal and assist statistics, but his job is going to be to do the dirty work so that others shine. This is his level and this is just the beginning. In attack, magnificent. For me, Gordon was the man of the match. He ran every ball, he fought and he helped Burn a lot (for me, the most important thing). He has quality, his ball handling is incredibly good and he is in a sweet moment after winning the U21. The best game from him since he signed for us and I think he is going to become one of the players in the League. Nothing to say about Isak. In the end, the millions we pay for it will seem cheap to us. A pity he couldn't hit the hattrick. That competition with Wilson has to make him (both of them) much better and he has to understand that Callum is also very good and that it will be difficult for him to play 90 minutes. With Almirón he was the one with whom he had the most doubts, but yesterday he showed that he is still plugged in and that his level will only improve the team. And when the team can relax... You look at the bench, and you find Wilson, Barnes (fantastic debut), two boys from the house like Murphy and Longstaff or Livramento so that the level doesn't drop. Only yesterday I had a small regret and that is that, after the great preseason, Howe did not give Anderson more minutes.18 points

@Alex I also like everything you say. There are journalists (and in general, the popular voice) who have spoken in recent years of PSG and Manchester City as an illegal team without realizing that they have always been just as illegal. In Spain, 35% of the inhabitants are fans of Real Madrid (and they reach 50% if they are added to the fans of small teams that have Real Madrid as their other team). And here is something that happens. Most of the fans of Second Division teams (or many of the First Division) like Málaga, Córdoba, Valladolid, Elche, Getafe are really Real Madrid fans. The same thing happens with Barcelona. A total of 25% of the population is a Barcelona fan, and they reach 35% if fans of secondary teams are added. So this is like the Scottish League. Celtir-Rangers (Barcelona-Real Madrid). And everything is organized so that they always win. Never anyone else. In the last 20 years, Barcelona and Real Madrid have always been first and second in the League. Except for the years, now with Simeone, in which Atleti have been involved. The distribution of economic rights was rubbish until 4-5 years ago, because the distribution was as follows... 150 million for Real Madrid, 150 million for Barcelona and 300 million to be distributed among the 18 remaining teams (Atleti took 40 million and was the 3rd with the most). For a few years, it turns out that they talk about English teams and PSG as illegal teams for their money... Today, the front pages in newspapers in Spain were something like "Money beat football". And it turns out that the story is curious, because Real Madrid has always been one of the 2 richest teams in the world since records exist (and today it is the 2nd, only 30 million behind Manchester City). Real Madrid is the team that spends the most money to pay its players. And that for not getting into more complex issues, such as that in 2001, UEFA prohibited Real Madrid from playing in the Champions League due to its high debts with the Spanish State (Treasury). And only a week later, an ILLEGAL reclassification of land was achieved that Real Madrid sold to the government for a price 6 times more than its value and went from being the most indebted team in the world to the richest in the world thanks to a so-called crime town. And since then... He signed Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane, Beckham, Owen... They won again in Europe, etc. Real Madrid and Barcelona have a different tax system than the rest of the clubs in Spain (they pay less taxes) and they have been sentenced by the TAD for years to pay more money (and they don't). Barcelona, last year, exceeded the salary limit of Spain, and the League cheated so that it could register Lewandowski, Kounde and Christensen (yes, with the rule in hand, they could not play). The problem is always the same. When my team wins and is the best, I don't care. Uncritical. I don't care if he's doing bad things in the offices. When another wins, and they remove me from my site, I feel bad and criticize him. It makes my blood boil. Oh well. It is something we have to accept. The press (and I am a journalist) will always be conditioned and will rarely tell the truth.18 points

"This Exile 1968 character knows too much about our match fixing and is also a threat if he puts his football boots back on. Arrange either a car 'accident' with faulty breaks or get the lad who did Gazza's knee in Walkers to come out of retirement and finally put and end to Exile 1968's football career. We can't let this existential threat linger on for much longer."17 points

Am reading through the hidden thread to see their reactions and IMO it was more muted than usual (mostly because anyone who posted in the thread was roundly attacked by 5 or 6 other posters because Sunderland were playing too and no one should even be thinking of our game). Came across this though: I just want to take a moment to call this out for what it is. It's cowardice. Fear. Terror, even. The reality he is putting forward is that we have ceased to be a football club anymore, and are now something different, thus negating our rivalry with them. We are no longer Newcastle United. He's right that the rivalry has died in terms of the true meaning of the word. We are now untouchable to them in a very real sense - after a certain point this will be cemented for all time IMO, not that we're quite there yet. He knows this, we know this. It is no longer a rivalry not because we are no longer Newcastle United, but because they are so comprehensively outclassed by every aspect of our club, that the word no longer has meaning. There aren't 3 clubs in the North East anymore, there is one + a few smaller outfits like Gateshead, Blyth and Sunderland. He can try to reframe this however the damn hell he wants, but he is fucking terrified of the day he can't keep reality out anymore. The day we line up against and then absolutely obliterate them. Truthfully we are already doing this, we are obliterating them in relative terms every day of the week - but eventually it'll come through on the football pitch. This is why they don't want promotion. This is why they want to tell themselves that this is no longer a rivalry. This cowardly, weak, pathetic response from them dressed up in "humanitarian concerns" is transparent and obvious. Die on your fucking feet Sunderland fans, you lying, dismal, cringing excuse for a supporter base.17 points

An update. I feel so fortunate. Back at home with the family, had a very long and frank discussion with Mrs Rents. She'll continue supporting me as long as I don't drink, which is obviously fair enough. It's a week now since my last alcoholic drink, and believe me that is my last. The acomprosate helps a lot, it has entirely stopped any desire for drink at all, bit of a miracle drug tbh. Strange as it seems, I think my recent alcoholism is a symptom not a cause of my problems. But regardless, it clearly will fuck my life anyway. Abrupt cessation of my antidepressants was the most stupid thing I have ever done and I think precipitated this crash. I need treatment for my anxiety and depression, especially the former. I will see the GP next week to discuss options. Other than that I have a one to one meeting with an alcohol recovery specialist next week, see how that goes. Work have been amazing. As well as giving me this week off to recover, they have offered part time working and even a sabbatical if I need it. I will repay them with full commitment from now on. Best of all is I'm going on holiday to Mallorca in 2 weeks. Drinking is always part of the holiday for me and I always feel ill for at least 1 day. I am literally looking forward to the liberation of not drinking at all this time, no hangovers, more energy for the kids and wife. I know it will be hard but with the acomprosate I'll get through. Can't wait to swim in the Med. Also my uncle is coming down from Scotland to talk with me today. We are like peas in a pod, same genetics definitely. He had to stop drinking around my age for the exact same reasons. He's been alcohol free for more than a decade now, hasn't stopped him enjoying life. Going to gratefully receive any wisdom he can impart. Onwards and upwards from now. I need some hobbies so might ask CT for advice there. key priority though when I get back from hols is to get fit. I'm starting from a good place ironically because the hospital did every check imaginable on all my organ systems and wouldn't discharge me until they were satisfied I was fully physically fit. So I got a free MOT courtesy of the NHS. Once again, thanks everybody here for your support, helped me through the darkest period of my life.17 points

"Like Alannis Morrisette said once back in the days of entertaining Newcastle United sides, 'Isn't it ironic, don't you think?' Once loudmouthed, cockney gobshites with holsten piss on their shirts buying our best players plus Kevin Scott and Ruel Fox to now showcasing Son and Kane for NUFC to see if we're interested in buying them? Lol. This is your match thread and I'm the people's chosen reporter, been there, marched up seven sisters, watched some frisk just a few yards away and now telling it like it is, straight from the shoulder like one of my mentors, one John Gibson esq. 'Caaaamm on you Spuuuurs', nar son, pipe doon, the proper chanters are in the smurk today to show you how supping, crooning and hopefully how football is done. Laters, Ryder and out!"17 points
