If this deal doesn't come off, anyone saying they're relieved or happy because it was too much money is just plain wrong btw. Us not landing a target that the manager and the DOF were both clearly massively keen on is a bad thing. Whoever we go to next is not who they really wanted. Just letting ANY DICKHEADS know in advance how this sort of chat will be met.5 points

Makes sense to me, minimise disruption and retain the city centre feel. I know the romantic in many of us would prefer to stay where it is, but I think we'd be left too far behind and making many compromises. I just hope they take acoustics in to account and need it improved over the current design.5 points

Yeah but look at that view of the river where they used to make the boats.5 points

Sure Newcastle became a "top 5" city in later medieval times. Working in the centre twice a week and trying to stay fit I do go for some quite long wanders though the city. The beautiful hidden architecture is everywhere. Far better than most large industrial cities like Leeds, Sheffield, Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool, just by virtue we are older. We're more a poor man's Edinburgh. Sunderland in comparison is just an industrial town, peaking late 19th early 20th century, with almost no notable architecture at all. This isn't having a go, it 's just a statement of fact. If you look at any of their videos about how great e.g. Keel square is, it's like, erm...., naah, hardly a destination location. Why they feel the need to compete with Newcastle (outside of football), with stupid incorrect statements like "Sunderland is the largest English city North of Leeds", is an odd one. I don't see Bolton competing with Manchester or St Helens with Liverpool. Instead of competing and failing, it would be better for them and the whole region if they worked to complement the rest of Tyneside and Wearside. Reading the SMB it will never happen though. They are ridiculously insular.5 points

The lengths we're going to to sign this bloke, I think it's safe to say that Howe and Mitchell REALLY want him and we are prepared to meet or at least get very close to Palace's valuation to make it happen. Which is why I want us to get him. The idea that we know better is canny mental tbh. PSR is Eales's problem. We need to stop worrying about it as fans and let the club manage it.5 points

I think palace are one of those clubs who don't like us tbh. I mean at the top, not just the gimps trying too hard in a part of one of their stands wearing black as though they think they're at an IRA funeral.4 points

Seen some italian twitter ITK saying if we're knocked back this time we'll leave it and turn our attention to Alessandro Bastoni at Inter. So presumably that means we're moments away from announcing Thiaw or Tomori or something.4 points

Would he be anywhere near that valuation without the England caps? Would he have anywhere near that many caps without the Southgate/Crystal Palace connection? I think the answer to both of those questions is no3 points

One of the main things I hate about sky is fucking transfer windows. Its created an industry for reporters standing outside clubs for a month and mongs on Twitter pretending to know anything. It’s so fucking tedious.3 points

The Keith Downie thread 😂 "I have it on good authority he disliked the mags but when the takeover happened he saw an opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and score a few free drinks on his regular nights out in newcastle." https://www.readytogo.net/smb/threads/keith-downie.1599123/page-953 points

Aye, I don't think you can keep carefully-carefullying your way to becoming a fixture in the top 4. It was completely necessary early on that we managed windows in that way - we'd be PSR busto now if we'd done what the press expected us to do and gone crazy on big stars early on. And the ownership did a fucking brilliant job with it, particularly that first window. But we've got to start stepping on the gas a bit and taking some risks, especially when everyone around us is doing exactly that. Backwards steps won't be acceptable to the ownership or the fans.3 points

I’ll see if I can find a link to it but there’s a German made map from about 1630 of Britain and Ireland. As well as Newcastle and Durham it features places like Hartlepool, Hexham and even Keswick, Appleby and Ambleside. Yet despite their famously fighting against Newcastle in the imminent English Civil War, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of Sunderland.3 points

Honestly mate, I'm not trying to understand the accountancy stuff around football. They change the rules every five minutes anyway. I want us to spend big money on players to get better, and I don't want to have to think about the PSR implications of it anymore. It's boring and it's not the job of the fan to worry about it. If three years down the line, this means we have to panic sell some youngster, so be it. Not my concern, and it's 3 years away anyway - we might win a trophy during that time. The job of the fan is to want the club to go wild in the aisles every time a transfer window opens. Eales's job is to be Rachel Reeves and make sure it's done responsibly.3 points
