See this is why I've shy'd away from the full on "back eddie" stuff since the new people came in. There was clearly something wrong last season, the injuries were insane but the re-injury rate was incredible. From the outside looking in its a fairly easy conclusion to jump to that the players were being pushed too hard. Gordon and Hall have both said since they signed that they weren't "eddie howe fit" when they arrived, and it took both of them quite a long time to get there. These are already professional footballers, its not like one of us rocking up. If (this is a big if and pure speculation on my part) the performance whatever bloke has come in and looked at the data from last season and suggested to howe that he might need to rethink his training intensity and Howes response has been to flex his muscles a bit in the press with the england job and his "im happy here as long as im backed and allowed to do what i want" thing then thats not a good thing on his part.6 points

The difference back then was the club held your registration even after contract was over. So they could stop you moving but then put you on significantly worse terms. They could also demand a transfer fee, even though the contract was expired. So, in PL’s example, Alan Ball could’ve seen his career effectively ended by not agreeing to the move. This is what happened to Jean-Marc Bosman, and precipitated his legal action. Ironically Bosman was left skint by it all, once his legal fees were taken into account and has never had any meaningful recompense since. Despite being largely responsible for making players and their agents much more powerful and rich as a result of what he did.6 points

If Vance thinks childless people aren't suitable to be politicians because they have no stake in the country's future, I'm sure he'll also be happy to exempt them from paying taxes that fund education, child healthcare and the like.5 points

he'll be missed - a great servant, but he's getting on and we have a superb replacement. trips helped kickstart the revolution and deserves massive respect from us - he's been one of the greatest leaders i can remember seeing at newcastle. as important for this transformation of newcastle as killer kilcline was at the start of keegan's reign4 points

Ten Hag signed his contract before we settled with Man Utd didn’t he? So yet another foot in mouth moment possibly?4 points

Are those your nicknames for Burn and Longstaff? Or is "Longstaff Burn" the name of the STD?4 points

Sorry if already posted, but good enough to repeat. While the quote was bollocks, it absolutely reads as true and your head will only read it in his voice: https://www.rawstory.com/trump-ear-growing-back/#:~:text=A falsified post on X,been viewed 1.5 million times.4 points

Yeah, I remember you saying that and it was a good call, although probably an underestimate. I don't disagree tbh. Israel were always going to get their pound of flesh at a ratio of at lease 10 to 1. As the survivors of the race most affected by the holocaust, I find this particularly disturbing. I just think the realpolitik of it meant that Biden couldn't prevent it happening, short of a military intervention against Israel itself, which is of course unthinkable.3 points

I don't think it matters one hoot what Biden (or anyone else for that matter) said. Netanyahu was caught with his pants down and wanted retribution. I say very little about the Israel / Hamas situation because it is so very polarising.3 points

Speech is at campaign headquarters, hence all the hootin' and a-hollerin', but this is good patter if you take all of that out. Exactly how you should run against a rapey fraudster and felon.3 points

It’s absolutely the case that Howe will consider it really seriously. For the exact reasons Polarboy mentions. He might decide not to. But I honestly think I’d take it in his position. Even if he’s a failure, the things he’s done here and at Bournemouth had proved his credentials as an excellent club manager so he’ll always have that to fall back on. He’s got a great opportunity here, but we’re kidding ourselves if we think the chance (and it’s a real chance with this group of players) to win the World Cup with England isn’t a bigger draw for just about any manager3 points

Centre paddock was my place of choice if I was flush. If we’d been on Shoot previous weekend, TV gantry at the back (scaffolding poles and a few planks) was often still in place, great view/seat 😀2 points

No but the power that may be withheld from or wielded against a politician for angering the (pro-Israel) Jewish lobby may not be enough of a concern for Macron to speak out against Israel's actions. Maybe I'm cynical but I view the positions held by China and Russia to be more "The friend of my enemy is my enemy" kind of thing. Think about the atrocities carried out by those two and the sheer effrontery to condemn Israel for doing similar? The utter hypocrisy for Russia, in the midst of their illegal and horrific invasion of Ukraine, to pearl clutch about Israel is staggering.2 points

this, i agree with. and so tghe cycle of hate and vengence continues - on both sides. it's fucking hopeless2 points

I don't think you can compare genocide with Brexit. Even just as a "thing rational people don't want". I mean, when is the right time for the sitting President to speak out against one of it's closest international allies, especially one which exists in an area where the US has very few friends. I don't think us calling out the barbarism is the same as the US President doing it at all. I mean, look how long it took the international community to speak out against it? And they don't all have as much invested in a strong Israel as the States do. It's too unrealistic to expect Joe Biden (or any leader) to say this conflict is wrong. It shouldn't be, but it is.2 points

JD Vance using the Leadsom approach of coming after her for not having kids btw. What a fucking creepy wide faced weirdo he is. That nonsense ended Leadsom's attempt to become PM, it would be nice if it had a similar impact in America. The word seems to be that the Republicans now think they've made a mistake picking Vance. That pick was a cocky one designed to pile up votes with their base in the case of a landslide, it wasn't designed to win over swing voters in the case of a closer election. Since Biden dropped out they're now wondering if they've fucked it. Which is lovely.2 points

Apart from for selfish reasons I would like them to at least try that model, ie Carsley. What’s the point in putting that into system into place if you don’t at least then give it a go?2 points

That probably came out well after he’d left office I’m guessing? And I doubt he’d have done much holding back if there had been something like what Hamas did in September. Not a defence of Biden really but the circumstances are different and completely unique. I don’t really know how much Netanyahu would listen to anyone anyway. I know the US holds a lot of sway because of the foreign aid and arms they supply, etc. And it’s utterly fucking appalling what has happened and continues to happen in Gaza. But it still doesn’t make Biden analogous with Putin (or Netanyahu or the Hamas leadership) imo. And you have the added layers of complexity in the US and Israelis (I imagine) sharing intelligence etc. while the latter fights its proxy war with Iran. Which also has far wider implications (Russia, China and so on). It does feel like Biden could and should have done more in terms of a ceasefire, but as Fish says it’s hard to know exactly how much pressure is being applied in private. I think the ‘Genocidal Joe’ type of comments are ridiculously childish and simplistic as well.2 points
