I've posted the photo below before in a discussion about remembrance day. The young man standing and kilted is my great uncle Gordon, he was killed in action in 2015 at the battle of Loos, he has no known grave. We have all his letters up to his death (and letters afterwards from the war office and his comrades). Reading them over the years I feel like I knew Gordon. Well today I received a letter from the MoD, they think they've found him !!! 100 sets of remains were discovered whilst a hospital extension was being built in Lens next to Loos. What makes them think this one particular set is Gordon is that he was found with some buttons from Newcastle Tramways Corporation (weird eh?), my Great Grandfather (retired Sgt Major seated in photo) was Chief Inspector of Newcastle Tramways when he retired from the army. Too much of a coincidence surely. DNA kit awaited to confirm. Excited and quite emotional here !!! (The bairn is my grandfather)8 points

It's not that surprising tbh, must be hard watching Sunderland every week and not literally getting them confused with Brazil '70......5 points

Who else was going to pay the scab bastard 80k a year? 🤷🏻♂️ After his stint as dep. chair he’ll now be set for life and although he’ll be out on his arse by Christmas he’ll receive plenty of attention as a leading member of Reform….he’ll go polluting public life for whoever pays him eg GB News4 points

The pro cyclist Lizzie Deignan is from Otley. For the last few years shes lived in Monaco like a lot of pro's. Anyways, she's come back home. I was out with a group yesterday and we saw her in the caf in the Dales. It was a beautiful day, One of the lads was 'Oh God county, she's come back to this' fuck off silly cunt. Why would she swap stunning roads, decent weather and clean and tidy place for this fucking shit hole?4 points

That’s amazing news @Toonpack, well chuffed for you. I went to Thiepval a few years back, the memorial to the missing, and one of the things that struck me was just how many names are listed of missing men. 72,337 And that’s just men from the battles of the Somme. So pleased your relative has been found, and in time for there still to be a tangible connection between you and him.3 points

They’ve been building a new hospital since 2021 work for that is what uncovered them evidently. Have no idea how long ago he was found (if it is him) but the location (MoD sent me a map of the discovery) also fits with what the letters from his comrades said, at the German second line trenches where attack stalled and killed covering retreat from counter attack.3 points

Yeah, they say he's the only one in his regiment that could have had any link to the Tramways, must have been given the buttons for good luck, or perhaps, given my great grandad was a career soldier and saw significant action in his time pre WW1, maybe a thought of "if the worst happens these might help identify you" - and here we are. They found the link through the 1911 census. When Gordon was killed a young Lieutenants mother wrote to my great grandmother asking if she had any news as her son (also MIA) was reportedly last seen with Gordon, MoD lady I spoke to today said "believe it or not, I was researching Lt's Chapman's next of kin this morning" with regard to remains found close to what we hope is Gordon.3 points

Aye, it's incredible how anyone with his life experience could decide that the Tory party was the one for him.3 points

I wonder if the Leicester fans will look at a tweet about his tea and try and find hidden messages like some of our chin dribblers did.3 points

(Six if they added Sunderland to the list which they were surely going to do until the shady Cabal of Mysterious Tyneside Businessmen probably vetoed it, probably).3 points

One thing that hits you when you go abroad is the lack of litter. A day out in the National Parks here is superb. But as soon as you get back close to civilisation and the litter slowly builds it's fucking depressing.3 points

Is the fat cunt in the background, with the faded shirt (no doubt to blend in with the seats), the beastie from The Thing?3 points

I’ve spent many hours in San Gimignano in Assassin’s Creed, so I’m counting that and upping my tally to 8.2 points

Lately I don't have much time to watch football and evaluate players. I know that Inacio is the defender that Real Madrid has had in mind for a couple of years. He looks like he's going to be very good and I think we could say that he is a similar player to Botman. I have seen him play in other years and with Portugal Youth and he looks very good. I have never seen the other one because he arrived at Sporting a few months ago.2 points

That's mad that they think they've identified him after all this time. Hope the DNA results come back a match.1 point

The UK is a great country, I love all the countries of Europe I have been to, always felt we shared a kinship which is one reason why I fucking despise Brexit. Europe is by far the best place on the planet to live with its immense diversity in a relatively small area. As that survey alludes to, I haven't even seen the vast majority of it, despite being quite a seasoned traveller bk (before kids). North America is just a huge monoculture in comparison. Never had the pleasure of the antipodes but there are some right dodgepots over that way and Oz looks way too Americanised to me. Japan is still on my bucket list, and I've missed two huge continents outs here, South America and Africa. Don't like South Africans and find poverty a bit shit though. Way things are going the Isle of Wight will probably be an exotic holiday for me.1 point

Rome is on it, Edinburgh, Barcelona etc. All touristy, busy, expensive. I thought it was focused on architecture. Venice is unique and if you avoid San Marco, no more expensive than some others.1 point
