There definitely has to be a way to target Hamas officials rather than carpet bombing half the region.6 points

They're obsessed over there with expanding their stadium so it has more seats than SJP, a la Bob Murray. Has it ever even sold out once since their last derby against us? Anyway, it can't happen according to this ITK.3 points

@Alex @spongebob toonpants @Renton Thank you lads. It's been a really tough few days. It's time for me to duck out of this thread for a bit Peace3 points

The last couple of lines from Renton kind of nails it for me. What is happening (not just the most recent events) is down to so many external factors and not just the direct combatants at present. The unwavering support for Israel and ignoring the simmering resentment / plight of the Palestinians on one side. Then the stoking of the flames from Iran and others. Saudi Arabia making a play in their regional opposition to Iran. Egypt helping in the blockade of Gaza (again not just recently). All of it gradually making things worse until it blows up again. And it will happen in the future too if Israel just complete a successful military operation which is essentially a short term fix. It’s profoundly depressing and I don’t know how you put it right. But I don’t think just blaming one side solves anything. And for what little my opinion is worth, I think it’s grossly unfair to say Gloom has been anti-Palestinian in the views he’s expressed.3 points

Who do you imagine you are arguing against here. Dr G neither supports nor condones Netanyahu or the right wing loons ruling Isreal. Conflating Isrealis with their govt is exactly yhe same as blaming Palestinians for Hamas.3 points

There is no question that there is the right as well as the need for Israel to take action against Hamas. But there is the question what means are justified but especially how to stop the breading of new terrorists. As long as the conflict is going on there will be new terrorists and groups evolving.3 points

yes, they’re removing Hamas from power. Do you expect any other reaction to the atrocities Hamas committed on Israeli soil last Saturday? Put yourself in the shoes of Israelis for a moment. Containment is no longer an option. There will never be peace as long as terrorist group committed to wiping Israel off the map governs Gaza. How do you think Israel should fight Hamas? Is it wrong to retaliate? Hamas created this conflict. It has to be removed. When the war is done, I hope the Israeli people quickly remove Bibi and elect a government that will reignite the peace process. And that the Palestinian people are given the opportunity to elect new leadership in Gaza. I fear the opposite will be true: the invasion of Gaza and all the civilian casualties there will radicalise more more angry young men on one hand, and the terrorist attacks in Israel will garner more support for the nationalist far right. I hope I’m wrong, I really do.3 points

I don't think that's either true or fair. Gloom has condemned the leadership of both sides. and if I'm not mistaken, is in support of a fair and functional two state solution. Part of the problem here is the asymmetric nature of the power, which means there will always be far more Palestinians killed and displaced compared with Israel. My own feeling is Israel must show restraint and patience now, not fall into the trap Hamas has set to ignite the entire region. Public buildings and hospitals must be protected, power and water must be restored, the evacuation order should be rescinded. Because otherwise it is clear Israel is commuting a war crime and no way should we support that. They will and we will though.2 points

you'll have to explain how i have come across as anti-palestine. i am pro-israel and pro-palestine - that has been pretty consistent in all of my posts. i think the thing that separates me from the majority of progressives is i am not anti-israel.2 points

I can't help comparing Braverman and the tories stance on the boats to Netanyahu and the right wing Israel's (and for that matter Hamas"s as well) attitude to the conflict. If any of them could snap their fingers and solve the issues in an instant none of them would do it as their reason for being and route to power would not exist.2 points

I'm getting a Strandberg. Left shoulder is fucked and I'm wanting to see if having a much lighter, better balanced guitar might help. The more I look at them, the more I like them. They're not remotely cool but neither is not being able to play cos your shoulder's cabbaged.2 points

Thanks I, @Blastronaut, really don't want to lose her but it's the contract we enter into with pets. She's 14 (Scottie's normally only live to 12 so we have been lucky) and has a tumour on her liver but as long she's not in pain and still able, she has the run of the house. And being Scottish, as you can imagine, she can be a right stubborn one. She's unfussed about music and is happy to listen to most things, although her brother who we lost two years ago, I swear he was an old jazz muso reincarnated and fucking hated anything with feedback, which is a lot of my taste.2 points

One of my oldest friends moved back to Tel Aviv 6 months ago. He has a 7 year old son, who hasn't left their bomb shelter in 72 hours. His pacifist brother has been drafted He is probably the the most progressive left wing person I know and hates Bibi with a passion, and blames him for Hamas having so much power. Netanyahu has actively promoted Hamas to sideline the PLO and any possible peaceful way forward He is in despair, and thinks there is no answer to this.1 point

That first half was amazing. Should have just got rid of the Wales/Arg/Fiji/England side of the draw - the semi finals are going to be a complete mismatch1 point

Unspeakable slaughter, but I’ve seen nobody flying an Israel flag When Russia invaded Ukraine last year, the schools near me put Ukrainian flags in their windows. When George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis two years earlier, Black Lives Matter posters appeared overnight all over my north London neighbourhood. Because that’s the kind of caring, sharing milieu in which I live, full of politically aware good liberals. So do you know how many Israeli flags I’ve seen in the week since Hamas kidnapped, raped and slaughtered over a thousand Jews in Israel, from geriatric Holocaust survivors to tiny babies? That’s right: nada, zip, none. On the contrary, several north London Jewish schools have closed out of concern for the children’s safety. My children’s Hebrew school is, for the moment, still open, but it has been sending regular updates about security measures it is taking — on top of the ones it normally takes. “Well, now we know who would have helped us, and who would have pushed us on to the trains,” a friend texted me. I generally recoil from Second World War comparisons, but I couldn’t deny this one. After all, Hamas’s founding charter calls for a Jewish genocide and accuses Jews of being behind the French Revolution, the freemasons and the UN. It is indistinguishable from Nazi ideology. And when Hamas terrorists committed pogroms last week of the kind we thought died out with our ancestors in eastern Europe a century ago, so many good caring, sharing people decided that the right response was to say Israel had brought this on itself. This is not “Jews don’t count”, to use David Baddiel’s memorable book title. This is flat-out “Jews deserve it”. Read the piece here It's a devastating intro and reflects my experience here in my liberal corner of South London, where some houses still have Ukraine flags and BLM posters in their windows. It is also mirrored in the huge numbers turning out for the march for Palestine yesterday compared to the much smaller attendance at the vigil for the massacre in Israel last Monday, which was attended almost exclusively by Jewish people.1 point

Israel declared war on hamas after the deadliest attack on jewish people since the holocaust. It is not at war with the Palestinian people This is unfolding exactly as Hamas wanted it to. Hamas does not give a shit about Palestinian or Israeli civilians. Hamas could end this now by releasing the hostages, which it won't.1 point
