Hope reporting that Howe said in his post match comments that, when they got all the players back and ran all the fitness and strength tests, Anderson was "by some distance" the most impressive performer. Which isn't gonna do him any harm with a bloke like Howe. Would be great to see him given a real chance this season.8 points

@asaintmaximin "4 years ago, I wore the Newcastle jersey for the first time. At that moment, I hadn’t realized that not only was I about to become a Newcastle player, but I was also about to become a Geordie. You might think « nice Goodbye message » but the sentiment runs deeper than any words I could say, from the very first months that I met the people of this city, I truly understood them and embraced their unwavering passion, which is why it was so important for me to give my all and if this meant to play injured or even not making statistics, I didn’t give a shiy as long as it would help my team. Believe me, I fell for Newcastle, I had great opportunities to leave during dark days, but that was too late I was already in love, I wanted, I needed, I had to stay for helping my team to save the club from Premier League relegation because it meant the world for me. Of course during those dark days some may have had their doubts, but I always believed in this club and look where we are today, it's just so beautiful. I'm leaving Newcastle as it should always have been and that's my greatest trophy because I was a part of it. A deep thank you to ALL of you, my team mates, the loyal fans, the staff, the Club, etc… I’ve seen all your messages, thank you and even though this chapter has ended, the story never stops. Newcastle is home now, I'll continue to be your biggest supporter, I'll watch every game and as long as the club keeps winning I'll be the happiest man in the world… and for sure you will see me again I love you, I love you sincerely, I love you like a Geordie brother. Once a Geordie, always a Geordie."7 points

I don't get the dislike for him. We always got the authentic ASM, the good with the bad. Like I said earlier he really did try to adapt his game under Howe, but some of his fragility remained and there was a lack of clarity around his physical fitness as well with an injury cloud always hanging around. I do believe he loved the club and the supporters just not quite as much as he loved himself. I wish him well.7 points

A player with outstanding qualities. He was too good for us on our worst days, but maybe he was missing something to fit in now that we have better days. Damn injuries didn't help him adapt too much in this year and a half. Anyway, all this doesn't matter to me. A special boy is leaving. And I'm not going to talk about football now. Maybe I do it because I'm a tribune/popular with the fans, but I insist, I don't care. From the first day he seemed in love with the city, with the community, with the club. He seemed involved with growing this team that was dead under Ashley's clutches. He never had a bad gesture, he always seemed kind to the fans, affectionate and careful with all the details of the club. A boy who seemed nice and was key to the good group in the squad. And his farewell message couldn't be better. At least I'm going to miss him a lot.6 points

They should move heaven and earth to revisit and revise the 90s plan with new modern tweaks, extra capacity and build as close as possible behind the leazes end so keep SJP in action until the new one is built. When SJP is demolished make it as green as possible to help replace what the new stadium displaces.6 points

Fuck, fuck, fuck, its real isnt it, its fucking real. Was in woolies when I first saw that post, fell down to my knees in the middle of the aisle, didnt want to believe it, been drinking every since. This is some serious bullshit, complete bullshit. Selling our best player for pennies, THE GOAT. a complete betrayal. 80mil plus spend on LWs on inferior players, a headless chook and bumbling barnes. fmd. This is a WAR CRIME. It feels like a nightmare come true and the emotions have been overwhelming, it's hard to shake off the feeling of despair. Saint-Maximin wasn't just any player, he was the heartbeat of our team. Whenever he had the ball, MAGIC happened. He could take on multiple defenders, create opportunities out of thin air, and score breathtaking goals that left us all in awe. Keep watching video after video of ASM with tears in my eyes even now, fuck. a bittersweet reminder of the joy he brought us and the immense void his absence leaves behind. a source of comfort and torment. His time with the club will always be etched in my memories. I'll cherish the moments of joy and brilliance he brought to the pitch, and he will forever be a hero in my heart. His legacy will endure, I WILL MAKE SURE OF IT. I'll wear his shirt with pride and share his stories with future generations of fans. and for anyone who thought I was leaving just because ASM has left, needs to find the nearest mirror, look deep into your own eyes and say "im a complete Muppet". Whatever we, as fans, think of him, there’s absolutely no way he’d be leaving for £30m if Howe really wanted to keep him (as opposed to just saying all right things about him).5 points

Got talking to an older NUFC fan in Spain last night. He said he'd been a season ticket holder for 16 years through the 90s and jacked his ticket in under Ashley. Him and a few of his mates at work did the same and now none of them can get to games anymore. It's sad and reminded me of the posts HMHM and TBD made a few days ago. I think I'm probably a bit blinkered as to how things were pre-Ashley. I was too young to go games on my own for most of the 90s, and then lived away from the North East until 2005. So the Ashley years are by and large my barometer as a match going adult. Apologies if I came across as being on the wind up the other day. I totally get why people sacked off the club under Ashley. Out of interest, would people be up for a new 80k seat stadium if it meant everyone who wanted a ticket could get one?5 points

Absolutely wish him well. That departure statement seemed really sincere and in my eyes he's a true friend of the club and was a bright spark in the dark times. Good luck ASM.4 points

I am still angry that he didn’t include the penicopter in his farewell video though.4 points

Similar to what I was saying earlier, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being sentimental as a fan. If you’re not you’re probably not much of a football fan. Good managers are ruthless though. I do think there’s other factors like FFP, for example. And I think it’s probably the case we got less than we might have just to avoid further scrutiny/hassle. But it’s also a position where we are well stocked and ASM is probably the least ‘Howe type of player’ we had in terms of wingers.4 points

ridiculous isn’t it. File under the amount of money we settled for with the shirt sponsorship. ASM is easily worth £35-40m in this market4 points

I am far from disliking ASM. He did frustrate me on the pitch quite often because his final decision was lacking awareness but overall he was a positive influence on and off the pitch. Ideally we could have been able to keep him but selling him to make funds available is a decision that does make sense. The fee is ridiculous though. We probably had to take less money not to rattle the big cunts though.4 points

I’m touched by his farewell message on insta. I don’t think he wanted to leave. Shame it didn’t work out for him but I wish him the best. He did a lot of good work with local charities and seemed like a good bloke off the pitch.4 points

For me, the form of Gordon, Miley, Anderson and Ashby in pre season has shown us we are well covered on the wings, in CM and RB. Any leftover cash absolutely has to go on a CB. In a perfect world we would have a LB upgrade, but that might need to wait 6/12 months4 points

From the first half and the level of snarkiness on display from our side, it reiterates what I love about this team the most -- and it's been present since shortly after Howe took over: we are never nice. Howe is friendly off the pitch, thoughtful, measured, polite, etc., and the players mirror that approach in press conferences, etc. But on the pitch that shit can get to fuck because we're going out there to win. I love it. It's what sport is about. It's a point about this side that burns even brighter as its exact opposite is reflected at the moment in the Ashes where both teams are obsessed with what the public thinks about them to the detriment of their performance. England's sanctimoniousness as the self-appointed Messiah sent to save Test cricket in the kenotic self-sacrifice of defeat. Then, Australia with a side that has lost its mongrel in a pathetic attempt to impersonate south-English gentlemanliness and repent for sandpapering a ball like they're the first to invent ball-tampering. It's pathetic. Bring on NUFC. A team for winners. So long to a summer of displays of weakness masked as moral superiority. These are beneath Newcastle United. Fuck the accusations of skullduggery from losers obsessed with the 'spirit of the game' or some other mackem-minded bullshit that losers spout as a consolation they award themselves in lieu of material success. We're going to fly high this season. Bring it on. (Brought to you by several afternoon scotches.)4 points

Very special experience, I screamed myself hoarse at the end. It was a little disheartening to see us a) playing crap in the first half and b) missing so many first-teamers, but things improved a lot once Brighton took off much of their much-stronger starting XI and our kids grew into the game. Barnes looked quite good though he should've scored in the first half. I don't know if we were under explicit instructions to play out the back, but the regularity with which we screwed it up in the first half was alarming (understandable maybe considering Dummett and Lascelles were playing.) Murphy barely touched the ball in the first half, I wouldn't have known he was playing if I hadn't seen his name on the lineup, but he definitely made an impression in the second. The atmosphere was a little flat considering how non-partisan the crowd was, though our lads in the designated NUFC sections made noise all game long. Some of the biggest cheers were for Caicedo and Estupinan, who were supported by hordes of Ecuadorian fans in yellow, almost as if there were a third team playing. The worst part was having to listen to a typical yankee doodle dumbass sat next to me, purportedly an Arsenal fan, who knew everything and nothing about football. The stadium also played the Blaydon Races at the end as we were filtering out, which was a nice touch.3 points

Nah sorry Wykiki, he was outstanding at times, frustrating at others. He gave hope when we were absolutely shit and he was entertaining when everyone else was Bruced. He clearly loved being the big fish in the little pond but then the pond got bigger. Wish him well wherever he goes.3 points

Nah. I can’t think of any other wingers who made Kyle Walker look as much of a chump as ASM did last season. We’re talking about one of the quickest, most talented right backs in Europe and ASM had him in back pocket all game3 points

I wish him all the best. The club may have outgrown him now but he was invaluable under Ashley, and for that I'm grateful.3 points

I didn’t dislike him- as Gloomy says, he seems like a nice bloke, who genuinely loved being here. As a player he was frustrating to watch as many times, if not more, as he was exciting to watch. Good luck to him.3 points

We are overreacting? You're going on as if Messi is leaving the club. Others too. He played 3 half decent games a season. He was a workshy soft cunt.2 points

If there was any risk of him going I would agree, but he has 3 years on his contract and is rightfully adored by the supporters and Howe etc. Give him a new contract through this season but get our business sorted in this window first so we know what numbers we're working with.2 points
