Minor incident at Palmersville Aldi there with someone’s old carrier bag handle snapping. The result being their bottle of Pinot Grigio smashing as it hit the floor. So fuck? Well, unless he’s got a doppelgänger who talks like him, I’m pretty certain it was Luke the chicken nonce Edwards.6 points

If France win on Sunday they’d have won three world cups and a European championship since 1998. Brazil, Germany Italy have won one each. Italy have also won a European championship. They’re all multiple World Cup winners. They know how to play tournament football. Croatia appeared on this stage in 1996 as a fully formed tournament football side with only 4 million people to choose from . The Netherlands also have a better record in the last 24 years of reaching finals and semis than England, population 16million Southgate is teaching English footballers how it’s done. He’s their best chance of them actually doing it regardless of how limited he is. If he leaves am thinking just about any coach remotely qualified to do the job will be a downgrade. He’s had enough of producing then being annhilated for it. England aren’t exceptional, you win fuck all just for being English and that sense of entitlement might be driving the best chance of winning something away. What do you expect from the country who thought Brexit was a good idea though?…5 points

Special mention to the bloke claiming Shearer isn’t “classy” because he didn’t mention Sorensen saving it (why the fuck would he?) yet starting the sentence by referring to Shearer as “Arsehole”, that’s definitely classy marra do they engage their brains for a fucking second? Aye I think the lack of giving much of a fuck about their players is likely due to them being largely irrelevant, or average at best. Cattermole was a nob but he was also a dreadful player, if he was also a brilliant player who helped make them a good side we would probably be arsed about him more. They also really fucking hate when people are negative about their club (which is the cause of the hate for Barton), I think largely because they don’t get talked about much if we went on about people that are negative about NUFC the way they do about negative comments regarding SAFC we’d lose our fucking minds. They can call this deluded but we’re a far better known and discussed club, personally I think whenever they try to compare themselves to our stature they’re the deluded ones. I find them a crease tbh, I’ve said before we couldn’t wish for better local rivals. No matter how shit it got under Ashley they never once capitalized and kicked on, they basically were right there in the toilet with us and then got even worse . I mean I suppose it’s no wonder they seem to go on that Ashley was some great owner when you consider we finished 5th under him (higher than they’ve ever come in the PL era) and played more European games than they have in their entire history - despite that he goes down as a shit stain on our club. It’s going to be all part of the fun watching them lose their fucking heads in the coming years when we go up the gears as a club under this ownership, and the coverage we get switches to be positive, and glowing their hatred list will grow and grow .5 points

The FA headhunted Sam Allardyce last time round then gave Southgate a chance by default. That was after Roy fucking Hodgson. When was the last time a top manager at their peak got the job? Even Capello was a busted flush.3 points

A problem they have is that there are only really three proper managers in the PL right now who are english excluding Gary O'Neil who just got made permanent bournemouth manager for his first job. You have Lampard, Howe and Potter. Howe and Potter are, frankly, too good and doing too well to be considered for the job right now, which just leaves Lampard. Kicking the can down the road for another 18 months makes a lot of sense really3 points

The Mackem coping strategy is fascinating like. When we were better than them despite being shit ourselves under Ashley, they had to invent this concept of them being more "classy" to cope with the reality of the situation. As far as the cities went, they eventually gave up on claiming Sunderland was a better city, conceding Newcastle held that. But only the city centre, apparently their surrounding suburbs are far superior (despite remarkably being a lot cheaper). Of course you have to take areas like Jesmond, Gosforth out of this made up fact (can't remember why?) and coastal places like Whitburn are definitely in Sunderland but places like Tynemouth are excluded as they are North Tyneside. Then, as the gap between us becomes stratospheric, so has their use of the trump card of morality. However, as we approach the end game, it seems their new coping mechanism is censorship, simply banning people whose opinion does not toe the SMB line. Shame, it used to be a decent forum in all honesty, now it's just descended into insanity.3 points

Burn, Botman, Schar and one other brought in perhaps? The rest all make sense, we don't really need them, ritchie has hardly played, fraser is back of the queue in an area we're looking to make stronger. Lewis should have been better than he is, I feel sorry for the lad that the most important phase of his career development as a top level pro was spent under Steve Bruce, if he was 2 or 3 years younger right now he'd have a real chance to develop under howe3 points

Some of the replies re: Shearer on that thread alone. Add in the countless usernames with FTM or some reference to Shearer being a wanker. Or Barton. Or Benitez. Or Beheady Eddie. Etc. Yet we're the ones being wound up? Honestly, I can barely think of a mackrm player or manager who I even particularly care enough about to dislike. Perhaps Cattermole, was a bit of a twat. Hutchinson, but not because he played for them, he eas just an arsehole. Wasn't a fan of that paedo who played for them or that fascist manager they had, but could scarcely give any of them a seconds thought now. Most my hatred goes to some of our own like Souness and Lee Bowyer if I'm honest. I just find mackems tragically funny.3 points

Following Kane's penalty miss, Shearer admitted he still can't forget his penalty that was saved by Sorenson, which was a shit effort tbf. 20 odd years ago now. Naturally this has prompted a gloating thread on the SMB "what a day that was marra. FTM" etc. Usual slightly disturbing vitriol directed against Shearer. This caught my eye though. I mean, imagine investing this much time, money and effort to get one over your "mate"? I love the fact he says how easy we are to wind up at the same time as admitting the lengths he went to to do it. I'd gladly accept the picture, ditch the photo, and use the frame for something else personally.3 points

Kingston park is a wonderful place to watch Newcastle Women. Owing to some bizarre loophole you can have a pint in the stands. They get great crowds too, Wolves are top of the division above like so we were always going to get a hiding. However if they want to spend their weekends getting wound up that local women are paid properly to play sports & invested in then that's up to them.3 points

I can see Southgate letting the dust settle and choosing to see the contract out after the Euros. The FA will probably encourage him down that path so they don’t have to make any decision either2 points

Basically what Gemmill said- the England job isn’t the pinnacle of management anymore. I’ve no doubt that at some point in the future Eddie will go for it, he’s already stated his patriotism and whatever, but he’s got unfinished business here to do first. He’s just not a quitter , (unlike Hippoheed when he left skid marks in the turf at the SoS when Engerland came calling, albeit briefly )2 points

The fact that none of the top PL clubs would even consider appointing Southgate tells you all you need to know about how seriously international management is taken. No way Howe is gonna walk away from club football for that. You daft worrying fannies.2 points

Southgate's reign has been effective and relatively successful. A final, a semi-final and a QF - not even Bobby can match that. But for me there is something missing and it's difficult to put your finger on it. I just feel he plays it too safe at times and what we see comes across as quite boring. I think back to the Euros last summer and it was trying to replicate Italy - get the lead and then defend for your life. I dunno, maybe we are absolutely spoiled by watching a high press NUFC on a weekly basis but Southgate's England is far from enthralling. That said if he does walk there's logistically only one place they'll come looking to replace him so from that perspective, I hope he does stick it out.2 points

Good summary, first half I gave England the best chance when Saka played in Kane. It was good agressive keeping from Lloris to save that. The Tchouameni goal as we've all mentioned should have been saved. Pickford's positioning wasn't great and he was slow to move and even then could still have got the ball. There was an earlier headed chance for Giroud but the ball was behind him so he couldn't get much on it, but it was the start of a trend of Macguire not being able to defend crosses to Giroud. There was also a deflected shot from Kane from distance thay result in an easy showboating save from Lloris. I give England a marginal advantage on the first half. Other key things to note - there was a text book foul on Saka by Upamecano when France 'won' possession in the lead up to their first goal. There was also a foul on Harry Kane that started outside the box and possibly transitioned just in it that was not given. Horrible refereeing in both cases, and extremely costly to England. Second half England came out hard, there was a cracking volley from Bellingham that forced a good save from Lloris. 5 minutes after that some great interplay a clear foul on Saka in the box wins England a penalty which 2 minutes later Kane scored. Immediately after this an errant throw in results in a shot from distance from Rabiot which Pickford easily saves. It does set the trend for a nervous England period before Harry Macguire sends a very scorable chance wide from a Henderson free-kick. Shortly after Hernandez bails out France just clearing a low driven Luke Shaw cross that Saka was ready to put away. France then wrestle the momentum back with Giroud given perhaps the best chance of the game from a floated Dembele header into the centre of the box after an Mbappe cross. With the goal at his mercy Giroud sent it almost straight at Pickford who saved well. Macguire once again failing to pick up his man. A minute later a superb Griezman cross from the sideline is well met by Giroud, beating Macguire again and at that distance and speed Pickford can't save it. Then was the absolute brain snap from Hernandez to gift England the second penalty after the VAR called the referee over, and we all know what transpired thereafter. Note that there was more than 4 minutes between the foul by Hernandez and Kane taking the penalty. After 6+ minutes alone were lost to the two penalties there were only eight minutes of time added on, which IMO was short of what was due, especially in the context of time added on throughout this tournament. The referee was poor throughout, with the vast majority of that in favour of France. Overall I do give a slight edge to England which would have potentially been realised with a win if Pickford wasn't in goal or if someone who could mark Girout was playing instead of Macguire or if there was a decent referee.2 points

Over the years I've noticed a direct correlation between my confidence and ability in a chosen sport based off the level of associated equipment and gear purchased for said sport. That quickly metamorphises into an inverse detrimental impact once I take to the field/course/court/track through 'friends', teammates, opposition, members of the public and myself. Before: "These news boots as soft and comfortable without being worn in, really looking forward to my first game in them" Teammate/friend: "oooh new boots, do they make them for men?" After: "I shanked that shot due to these new boots". Members of the public: "a bit late in life for this guy to pick up a new sport" Opposition: *magically drawn to studding new boots*2 points

I’ve been largely critical of Southgate throughout his tenure, I think he’s done a good job of building a team rather than a collection of individuals and fostering a “club” type mentality which is something a lot of international sides lack. His failings imo have been tactical, the main one for me was as you highlighted his switching to a back 5 whenever he encountered a tough opponent - he finally didn’t do that and we gave (imo) the best team in international football a game (which I think we edged). He was let down massively by two blokes who he puts faith in and shouldn’t (Pickford and Maguire), which is definitely partially on him as he has other options and should have explored them. This is the first tournament since 2018 where I’ve actually wanted him to continue as the growth we’ve shown was evident to me, we controlled games and comfortably beat sides whereas in prior tournaments we suffocated opponents and didn’t score much, and then as mentioned we went toe to toe with France. I felt he should have been more aggressive with his changes, perhaps Foden into CM for Henderson and then bringing on Grealish/Maddison/Rashford, but at the end of the day as you say this one was very very fine margins. France got a number of lucky drops in the box where the ball was so close to being put in but bobbled to a French defender or was deflected away. The Italy and Croatia games were carbon copies in that we scored and looked good then sat back and invited pressure, this one showed growth and hopefully it continues. Agree on the last point too as I think squad wise we will be improving so I don’t see this one as our last chance, we have Rice, and Bellingham in CM who are both very young and will mature, players like Harvey Elliott coming through who will take over for possibly more limited CMs like Phillips and Henderson. Foden, Rashford, Saka, Maddison getting more experience along with possibly Sancho recovering form and others coming through. Defensively players like Guehi and Tomori are young and will prove better than Maguire.2 points

I thought that England did very well in the second half but France were back control of the game again when they scored their second. It was before when England should have pushed for another goal to win the game. Then a court of positive substitutions would really have helped.2 points
