  3. As a former frequent flyer and therefore bored with the whole experience, I used to fucking LOVE getting a nervous flyer sat beside me. (And believe me some were genuinely terrified) I would dispense endless comforting words about flying "all the time" to put them at their ease, all the while waiting for an opportunity and a noise to exclaim "what was that!!"

  11. Talking of astronomy, Jupiter is the closest it's been to the Earth for 59 years. My mum says she distinctly remembers talking to my dad and uncle (his brother), who were both into astronomy, about the approach then, and my Dad speculating what the future would be like on the next close approach and whether he'd be alive. He missed it but my uncle, who is a decade younger, is still around. I'll remind him of this story. My mum says the 6 decades have gone like the blink of an eye. The vastness of space and time is truly humbling.

  12. I used Aer Lingus on my first long haul flight to New York years ago in 1992. Could smoke in the rear compartment in those days. The plane landed in Shannon for immigration iirc. Anyway, it was a fucking ramshackle 747 that looked like it was going to fall to bits. On the return flight whilst taxiing for take off at Shannon the rear door exploded just behind me and there was an emergency evacuation. Had a T shirt on and ripped my arm with friction burns. Was told by air accident investigators afterwards that had that happened in midair (I.e. 10 minutes later) anyone in the vicinity not buckled up would have been sucked out. Nobody buckled up in those days. Been scared of flying ever since because of the oirish bastards. I reckon they owe me thousands for psychological trauma! Happy flight wykikitoon! [I'm assuming they've upgraded their planes]

  15. The idea that black people can’t come from privileged backgrounds is lazy racism. Her comments have been rightly condemned. Reminds me of how many on the left think all Jews are rich and white and therefore antisemitism isn’t as much of a problem as other forms of racism.

  17. In that 86 pic that’s Scirea in the back row next to Bergami. Scirea was so good he kept a young Baresi out of the team (Baresi actually made the 82 squad too so he’d been on the international scene a while). In fact he was so good that, unlike most Italian defenders of his era he didn’t even resort to the ‘dark arts’ and was generally a very fair player. By the time of the 1990 photo he was dead. Having died in a car crash in Poland the year before. He was retired then but in a scouting trip for Juve

  18. I'm not sure about this personally. We've gone beyond that. No solutions to our rotten constitution, no solution to Brexit. Tinkering around the edges just doesn't cut it for me.

  22. IMO we live in a dictatorship with a 5 year reset. We have absolute tyranny for 5 years where politics runs roughshod over everyone who didn't vote for the prevailing party, where leaders and manifestos can be changed and altered without recourse multiple times within that window, and where authoritarian control seeks to bend reality and information as it sees fit. Nothing about the way government has been run since 2016 has felt remotely democratic. It's been a coup d'etat by hardline nutjobs with the right wing press giving them the same sort of cover that Putin relies on in Russia to get his 'electoral victories'.

  35. It's the one thing I'd support bringing back the death penalty for. Lying while in office. Too extreme? The Tories have killed hundreds of thousands with their policies over the years - this should not be shrugged off if they're doing it off the back of lies and corruption. In both of those opportunities, the majority voted against the ruling party, voted against it's main manifesto promises, and yet have had to accept the most extreme, hardline policies. We had a 52:48 Brexit referendum that resulted in the most furiously right wing Brexit imaginable. Johnson's 2019 victory saw Remain parties receive more votes than Brexit parties. This is not democratic. Yes there was more than just one issue on the ballot and yes that is the system we have that everyone votes within, but what we are saying here is that not only do we have a period of 5 years of absolute, unchecked power - tyranny - we have it given to a party that best plays a flawed voting system that doesn't actually even reflect the desires of the majority of the people of the country, all of whom go entirely without representation in policy-making every time this happens. It is ludicrous.
