Belieiving the NHS should be free fro everyone is consistent with people being selfish, because its in their self interest. You only have to look at the US to realise in a privatised system only the super rich benefit, far beyond the top 15 percentile. And even then a lot of that 85% will resent "foreigners" using it, or people will drug, alcohol, obesity, or tobacco issues. I think all of us are motivated for selfish reasons. I want a fairer society because I think that will be a better place for ME and my family to live in. That's worth more to me than keeping my tax money. I don't want to step over the homeless on the way to my local Coop, I don't want the hell of antisocial behaviour on the metro bought on by nihilism as a consequence of hopelessness and lack or education, I don't want myself to decide which charity to donate to. I want the government to do it, and I'm willing to pay for it. Not this government though, the fucking cunts.

Well, if your past is horrendous and you don’t want to be stay the world’s über-cunts there is liitle room but to be critical about our history. Having said this it probably isn’t straight forward. A lot of it is down to the first generation after WW2 in the 1960s getting influenced by western culture. Because until then there was hardly a clear break with the past and a critical understanding of the past. You only have to look at how many participating in war crimes and the holocaust were able to get away scots free. It is ridiculous that we do need to charge 90-100 year old people for minor participations because the main culprits never got prosecuted or got even acquitted and are lucky to be dead now. You can’t take a critical understanding of your past for granted, too. There are always phases were people are getting tired of it, especially when the German society is drifting to the right again. You just have to look at a lot of people living in the states of the former GDR and the fascists of the AfD. They do have an idealistic picture of Germany’s past that isn’t any different to the one of the British brexiteers glorifying the British imperial past.

I strongly believe that Thatcher fucking the unions, and making trades become contractors, has had a huge influence in the “fuck you, I’m alright Jack” society we now have. Whereas with strong unions, the concept of strength through togetherness and looking out for everyone was front and centre in the minds of the vast majority of working people, now you have multiple small businesses trying to fuck each other over to win the contract, the result being a whole generation of working class Tories. It’s fucked up how many blokes I worked with who were “nice, decent, working blokes” who wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire if they could make a fast buck from it.

The end of your penultimate sentence says it all though mate. You're willing to pay for it. The ones I'm talking about want someone else to pay for it. They don't want to end homelessness by providing for the homeless, they want the homeless people moved on or locked up. They would baulk at paying more for the NHS than they do, they want diversity officers and the like fired so they pay less. They don't want provisions made for the youth of today to keep them engaged and out of trouble, they want them locked up and moved on. They think the answer to reducing crime is more crime fighting, not crime prevention. They'd look at the high taxes in the Scandi countries and think the people are being robbed by the government, completely oblivious to the high standard of living that it provides. They're also convinced that their opinion is as valid as evidenced arguments. In that spirit, I think the answer would be found in education, in community engagement and pluralism.

I was thinking similar. I'm finding myself shaking my head at people, not necessarily on here, but on other forms of social media who are taking the stance "fuck Ekitike/Botman! We don't fucking want them anyway!" None of us have any idea how accurate the links are or indeed if they are, how the negotiations are progressing. We have to be mindful that the primary attraction to overseas footballers when it comes to playing in England is London & Manchester/Liverpool. That isn't any bias away from other areas of the country, including ourselves, it's just fact. And if we choose to not recognise that, then we're being extremely ignorant. Representatives for the players will likely be looking through social media channels to see what the reception is. If they see likes of the comments above, why in the world would they ever recommend their client to consider playing there? I'm really not getting the argument about why people cannot accept that AC Milan (for Botman) or PSG (for Ekitike) may be more attractive propositions that they at least want to explore. Milan were the Italian champions with a rich history of top Dutch players on their books - Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard. PSG were the French champions with some massive names in the squad and are the biggest club in Ekitike's homeland. Both clubs are in the Champions League. We can't offer any form of European football. Would you expect both these players to sign for West Ham, Leicester, Brighton or Wolves (all of which finished above us) without exploring the possibilty of major European clubs who have shown an interest? I'd actually be concerned about their ambitions if they DID NOT want to know if a deal was a possibility in both these cases.
