The Home Office “Hostile Environment” of which the Windrush scandal was a sort of flagship policy was brought in by Theresa May to keep the votes rolling in from pigshit bigots so am not sure where any of that sits under the heading of tolerance tbh . You wouldn’t have heard heard a thing about it without tireless work from the Guardian newspaper , specifically Amelia Gentleman https://twitter.com/ameliagentleman?s=21 . For me it’s one of the worst things any UK government have ever done. As an attack on ordinary people it’s up there with Hillsborough iyam.6 points

I'm a believer in a Rodenberryesque future utopia, or at least I was, but it is probably even further away than Rodenberry predicted. You start of by creating blocks with FoM, which the EU pioneered. However, at this stage in our evolution we are simply too tribalistic and the reverse is actually happening, the resurgence of nationalism. The idea of the EU is/was to create an economic zone of relatively homogenous prosperity which gradually expands. As poorer countries in Eastern Europe are absorbed, their standard of living will improve and so they become part of the collective. Unfortunately this is a very slow process, causes resentment from entitled fuckers in the extant union, and underestimates the ethnic and cultural heterogeneity for it to work. There's a reason most science fiction is dystopian, its because the authors of it have correctly understood human nature. In short, we're fucked in the medium term at least. I genuinely think I may have already lived through the best times the World has had to off in this millennium.5 points

Nope, I’d expect he’ll be back when he wakes up later this afternoon for another round of pointless pedantry. Tonight, we will discus why Krafth is better than Beckenbauer, as the stats show. Also “pics of his missus & kids” … As if4 points

There's still only 5% of Windrush victims have received compensation man. And the twats that are in charge of the purse strings would get back in tomorrow if there was an election, precisely because a sizeable portion either couldn't give a fuck or worse are supportive.3 points

It’s like saying apartheid-era South Africa wasn’t a racist society because some white people who lived there thought it was scandalous at the time. And no, that’s not me saying the present situation in UK is directly comparable to there and then. The thing about Windrush is that, while it happening in the first place was bad enough, it’s arguably even worse that next to fuck all has been done to rectify it since.3 points

Anyone remember/into the Smithereens? The Bo Radleys? That Rickenbacker Jonny Marr guitar sound from the Smiths? Which let's be honest was all just a reinvention of the Byrds' guitar sound. If any or all of the above floated your boat then check out young US band called Chime School.2 points

I get that we are a country full of bigoted cunts that politicians have to pander to but just show some humanity ffs. What gives us more of a claim to live here than anybody else? Because we were lucky enough to pop out of a vagina here instead of some war-torn shithole in the Middle East? Fuck off.2 points

The number of asylum seekers hasn't increased, its actually decreased, they're just using more visible and desperate methods as other routes become unviable. Covid massively affected air flights, Brexit has enforced custom checks on lorries, two routes which were used previously. Each country within the EU is sovereign regards third countries, but all civilised countries are party to conventions on asylum put in place in the early 50s. What the EU try to do is spread the load of refugees throughout the union, which strikes me as being the most fair method. We want no part in that, well guess what? They don't owe us any favours. France and Germany accept many more immigrants per capita than we do. But there's many reasons asylum seekers want to come the UK. Part of it is language, family, and shared culture if they are from the empire. But mainly it's because the UK has allowed a black market economy to form with undeclared earnings, making it possible for these people to survive which they can't in continental Europe. So yeah, couple that with the fact we fucked up their countries in the first place, I'd say we as a country are pretty much to blame for this and European countries know it.2 points

So did Clarko get jettisoned or did he just get the message? I was hoping Ant would pull out the old "Facebook hack" ploy, post pics of his missus & kids/sad lonely existence etc etc for us to enjoy...2 points

Mass migration hasn't even started yet, when global warming starts leaving vast swathes of drought and desert things will get really spicy. I'm for abolishing all borders anyway. Let anyone live anywhere they want. It's a fucking outrage to think you should be able to stop humans living where they want2 points

Dunno, I tend to think the "people smugglers" are a handy scape goat and bogeyman. Just people capitalising on a tragic situation, but then that's capitalism for you. If they somehow didn't exist, the problem is still there, it will just mutate into more even smaller boats. Still, they serve their purpose which is exactly to distract from the geopolitics.2 points

Yesterday was a wet dream for the right. They get to express sympathies while saying to other would-be asylum seekers 'look what will hopefully happen to you'.2 points

If anything, greater transparency would have been more likely to result in the takeover going through - less straightforward to hide the cartel driven bullshit that was preventing it.2 points

Get him on to Ramatam’s debut album from whenever it was. Not sure it’s streaming but it’s all on YouTube since it’s Mitch Mitchell on the kit and some wife doing her best Hendrix and Blackmore impressions with bits of early 70s funk thrown in. Came up on a hard drive search (not by the police) the other day and it’s still a good time. Especially when pissed but he can wait a bit for that.1 point
