Already feels like that could be a crucial result. It feels reminiscent of the two previous relegation seasons under Ashley even this early in the campaign.4 points

'in defence of Steve Bruce he had horrendous injuries' I swear to God, there's species about to go extinct that aren't as protected as this bloke.4 points

irritates the fuck out of me how many times he name drops 'the premier league' during interviews. either on a bonus from masters and his mates or more likely some kind of pathetic and compulsive need to affirm where he's working. grotesque cunt.4 points

Sounds like we were hopeless for large parts of the game. But whether we deserved to win or not, VAR is taking the piss. That's 2 pens in 2 weeks the opposition haven't asked for and have been borderline (not clear and obvious errors). Then you look at the Murphy penalty that VAR ignored. It's a fucking joke. It's VAR re-refereeing the game, which is outside of its remit3 points

There’s also a “growing possibility” Steve Bruce is exactly as shit at management as we all said. Fucking Edwards man, what a rare looking cunt he is.2 points

Tim Sherwood has said one thing Steve Bruce can deliver is results , the manager with the lowest percentage of wins in the PL out of managers with a couple of seasons managed delivers results? The media is fucking completely fucking absurd when it comes to this bloke.2 points

I don’t think many of us on here supported the initial invasion or are naive enough to suggest we invaded to free Afghani people from oppression. But people were literally tying themselves to planes to escape the Taliban. It’s pretty obvious who they thought were the good guys. To give them 20 years of freedom then take it all away overnight is a massive betrayal. On a human level I don’t know how to feel anything else for these pour souls. Can you imagine having your life and all your freedoms taken away overnight? It’s absolutely brutal man, the way it’s been handled.2 points

The commentator at the end saying the boos were for var and the ref not Bruce. Just fucking nar, like. Absolutely bizarre the media loyalty this buffoon has.2 points

Second best again. ’I thought it was a harsh penalty.VAR again goes against us’ .Hey,look,we played well in the second half and hey,we could easily have won it but for VAR.2 points

Starmer even said last week we couldn't stay in Afghanistan indefinitely. I'd like to know why the fuck not? The west have given up more than just Afghanistan here. We've sold our core values down the swanney, and with it effectively murdered thousands of people through no fault of their own. If we don't believe in our own values, if we have such disregard to morality and the human suffering we cause, I think this is the beginning of the end for us.2 points

Very apt seeing as we’re not a football club. Watching this Man City game is actually relaxing as they can pass the fucking ball, our games are like one of those compilations that are designed to be unsatisfying where people cut cakes wrong intentionally as it’s like the players are purposefully making passing difficult.2 points

Theyve been training the Afghan Army for 20 years and spending 81 billion quid on that and equipment in the process. It's ridiculous to think another few months would have made any difference After Trump signed the deal with the Taliban in September the only choices were what has happened or go back to war with the Taliban at a huge cost to lives and money. The situation is undoubtedly shit, but there is a lot of naive wishful thinking going on here. There is no good solution2 points

It’s not as simple as saying you are either for or against “imperialism”. I don’t think it’s wise for the west to invade countries thousands of miles away to impose our values. But once that decision to go in has been made don’t you have a duty to the people you liberated? A responsibility to leave slowly and carefully? The exit couldn’t have been worse and my heart goes out to all the poor people stuck there. Democracy replaced overnight with sharia law, executions, girls suddenly told they can’t go to school, women arriving to work at jobs they no longer are allowed to do, forced into marriage, taliban fighters patrolling the streets armed with ak47s, It’s a cluster fuck2 points

Love how we don’t even have a match thread yet btw.2 points

The solution was competent and robust withdrawal to give the remaining civilian and military forces time to organise themselves to oppose a bloodthirsty and murderous regime. All I'm getting from this withdrawal is arrogant, imperialist sentiments that the lives of the local people don't matter in the slightest. That's what is so enraging about it. We went in without a care or thought about these people, occupied the country for 20 years, and then threw them to the wolves. Its just disgusting.2 points

In the 60s he was racist. In the 70s he began his coke-fuelled descent into becoming one of the dullest artists on the planet. In the 80s he abused and raped his then wife and in the 90s he let his 4 year old son fall 50 floors to his death out of an open bedroom window. Great to see him back2 points

Equally validly you could point out that he took over a club that was in a good, stable position and he’s now had two years to build on that.2 points

Because we’ve probably got the bare minimum in terms of staff and they probably aren’t paid that well either.2 points

Any celebs going to charter a private plane for the 1000+ Afghans allies we didn't process in time? Not trying to be a whatsboutist arsehole, but the outcry on social media about these dogs has far exceeded any interest in the men, women and children we've left behind and it fucks me off2 points

Aye, an entire argument smashed with one rebuttal. If I was in those press conferences, I wouldn’t be able to help myself.2 points

The Stones as musicians don’t seem technical geniuses on paper or anything but consider how many other bands have aped them and sounded shite, it makes you appreciate how they did it well. Obviously, there was the raft of great songs but the guitar interplay, playing what the songs needs rather than what you want to play, having an ear for hooks and an instinct when not to step over your band mate. All that sort of thing is the good musicianship you learn after you’ve learned the flashy shit. Something like Beggars Banquet sounds like a trashy blues band in a dive bar and sounds like it’s about to collapse on itself at any moment but nearly all of it is cooly performed and rehearsed. That takes some chops. Not to mention Keith Richards was off his tits on smack. They pumped out some shite as well, though2 points

Good grief, you want more of the US being the world's policeman? American foreign policy has been a complete shitshow since WW2, and every intervention they have made has been a disaster.1 point

I have strong concerns about China being a far worse global issue than the US ever has been - and the US stepping back from the world stage has emboldened people like Bolsonaro with all the consequences that has had for climate change. We need a strong US until Europe or some more mature power can replace it. Surely the alternative is that we go back to cold and hot wars between major powers. I don't like US imperialism or aggression, but I'd support one world government style solutions to problems, and with the US shrinking into the background that just feels further away than ever. That's not really the topic here of course, but it's my concern. And my rage about Afghanistan concerns how little they appear to care about the brown people they've just left behind. EDIT - will also add that this decision seems pretty popular with the yanks, which is I expect why it's been done. He's made himself look weak by how terribly it's gone, but the actual decision seemed to be welcomed.1 point

@essembeeofsunderland also, turning your back as someone is shooting is not simply an act of self-preservation it has historically been part of making yourself big with built in plausible deniability - ie. You turn your back so that it is perpendicular to the trajectory of the ball and extend your arms outwards casting the largest possible surface area to block or deflect the ball. If it strikes your arm then it couldn't possibly have been hand to ball as your back was turned. Of course with the introduction of new rules for natural position of hands this is no longer applicable, so it's muscle memory from learned behaviour that causes players to do this. It's really nowhere near as big an issue as you make out and has little to do with cowardice.1 point

They rolled over because they never supported the US invasion in the first place, they were getting paid to enlist so they did They Aghans at the top were completely corrupt and siphoning money out. The whole war has been nothing but a moneymaking excercise from the start1 point

I'll be honest I think Biden has done the right thing. What's the alternative, stay there forever?. They and we should never have been there in the first place1 point

And I also re-watched 'Shackleton's Captain' a documentary-drama on Amazon prime, (not sure if it's available elsewhere?) which is fucking superb and mixes real life photography and film with actors playing the part and biographers/historians chipping in. Puts the monumental efforts into perspective far better than the film focusing on Shackleton where he's played by Kenneth Brannagh and gives, (rightly) his Captain, Frank Worsley his proper due. I 100% would've been Shackleton's chippie had I been there and the pettiness that he held towards the bloke who basically cannibalised their boat that helped saved their lives was particularly unnecessary. Very good watch if you haven't seen it.1 point
