  8. Trying to stay on top of delta until the vaccinations are at a high enough level to prevent most hospitalisations and deaths. Biggest problem being that there are supply issues in particular for the favoured pfizer vaccine. The AZ has been the subject of plenty of negative media reports around the potential for serious blood clots and now with the virus back and spreading in certain areas there has been mixed messages from the goverment regarding eligibility for AZ - initially it was recommended for those over 40 only, then revised to over 60, then back to over 50 and now to over 60 as well as anyone 16-60 "where the benefits outweigh the risks, including in outbreak settings". Given that AZ can be produced in Australia it's much more readily available. Vaccination numbers are finally progressing at a reasonable pace with more pfizer around the corner and moderna now also approved and on the way. In the meantime Sydney has had cases continually grow for a couple of months now, now getting around 250 cases a day which has seen this delta outbreak bring the highest numbers of the whole pandemic for Sydney/NSW. The testing numbers are at record highs too, which is good. Other states and cities have been faster to implement snap lockdowns in the face of delta cases which for the most part is allowing them to stay on top of the case numbers through contact tracing and isolation of close contacts. But with the transmissibilty of delta the next case is seemingly always just around the corner so the focus has definitely shifted to vaccinations being the only way to ensure a future without lockdowns. That city you reference is Canberra which is wedged inside regional NSW, but not too far from Sydney where cases are spreading. Canberra had not had a single case of community transmission in over 100 days, and with this case being delta they're rightfully concerned and acting in proportion to the risk. Thankfully most of the elderly population has been vaccinated so the deaths with this wave have been much lower than the first. In total the entire country has had around 950 deaths attributed to covid, around 50 of those during this current outbreak. Getting to 80%+ vaccinations is only going to be possible by November, so it's going to be a long hard lockdown slog where it has not been nipped in the bud. Currently that's only Sydney but the second biggest city Melbourne has been in and out of lockdown and has been recording 20+ cases a day for a few days now. They've been most affected in the past so have been very quick to implement lockdowns with delta but even then it is proving to be a struggle.

  23. I think there's also an element of arrogance, the belief that La Liga would compromise for Barcelona and for Messi. End of the day, this is an issue of their own making, £1bn in debt despite being arguably the biggest club on the planet and arguably the most revered academy on the planet, getting more money from their tv deals than the rest of the league. Decades of mismanagement, decades of throwing huge contracts at players, it's ridiculous. The attempt to grab more money in the Super League was an obvious and desperate attempt to kick the can down the round. Re: the wage, he's the only player I can remember who has agreed to a 50% paycut to stay at the club, so it appears like he's loyal to Barcelona.

  27. I’ve said the same thing loads to the pricks who say what a fantastic business man he is in reference to how he runs the club. It seems to me he’s not really interested in the club beyond it turning a profit via premier league survival on a shoestring and as an asset. That’s why Charnley keeps his job. He’s cheap and the club continues to tick over. If what the owner said was true about wanting the club to be successful but also living within its means then commercial revenue would be maximised. Likewise the academy would be a priority because you can make money be selling to Championship clubs even if not many players make the grade in the PL. Survival / stagnation is easier. What it ignores is how lucky his high risk strategy has been with our being able to bounce straight back from two relegations. Even under Bruce, a frankly ludicrous appointment, we’ve accrued more points than our football deserves. Given the owner’s inability to learn from past mistakes you’d have to think another spell in the Championship is on the post if he doesn’t manage to sell up first.

  28. It's the stagnation of commercial revenue that I keep coming back to. Ashley's owned a Premier League club that's bobbled around the Deloitte top 20 richest clubs, yet we've been overtaken by Brighton and Leicester, both teams who were in the third tier of English football in 08/09. I mean, Jesus Christ, Brighton and Leicester have spent 4 and 8 years in the top flight respectively during Ashley's 14yrs, where we've spent 12. It should be mortifying to a businessman of his success to have failed so spectacularly, especially when the Premier League has been so successful a product worldwide.

  31. Also worth noting we just got somewhere near £10m from the Armstrong deal (40% of the 23m profit Blackburn made as iirc he was 25m), so even with that coming in we’re still making fucking zero progress. It’s a fucking disgrace, of course we are used to incompetence but this off season has been an absurd level of neglect from the ownership.
