Underrated / Forgotten Gems

I've had Inland Empire on dvd for ages mind you and I just can't get round to watching it for some reason (possibly because I want to try and watch it in one session, something that's becoming increasingly difficult for me to do with anything over an hour and a half long).

It'd mind boggling.

I saw the full version touching nearly 41/2 hrs at the cinema and we had a sorerly needed break.

I won't comment on the film as you haven't seen it. :)

If it's anything like FWWM or Mullholland Drive I will need to watch it more than once. The only one of Lynch's less straightforward ones that I managed to get my head round first time was Lost Highway. And that's only because I had only recently watched MD several times and read several threads on the IMDB fourms.

Right! But apart from The Elephant Man, The Straight Story, Wild at Heart and Lost Highway. WHAT has Lynch ever done that anyone can understand.

Das Experiment.

German film based on true events; the experiment with prisoners and prison guards that gets out of control as the guards abuse their power. Some quite powerful scenes of the prisoners humiliated and tormented, quite hard viewing for me at times but a brilliant film nonetheless.

Never heard of it. Will keep an eye for it though.

That's why I'd rather call it unknown than underrated. I never knew it got dubbed.

As far as I'm aware it's never been dubbed, by my version has subtitles. :)

i enjoyed roger dodger. that seemed to pass unnoticed on release.

naked is a forgotten classic too - good call alex. ewen bremner's character is different class but it's difficult to have much sympathy with the main character johnny - a brilliant turn from david thewlis

Blue velvet is quite lifelike if you move in the right circles

I find some of Peter Greenaway's films are too easily dismissed. A zed and two noughts and the belly of an architect

are both great films.

Also Penn's first film direction Indian Runner is one of those films that has been lost in time but is worth the effort.

to be honest.

if i won best director / palm d'or at Cannes.

i'd die a pretty happy man.

Been to Cannes a couple of times to the festival full of cunts and producers trying to get seed money. Nothing special these days.

Venice is where it's at.

:)

Not the Berlinale? Where's your loyalty?

I trying to finish a project I'm working on before October to enter it in competition at the Berlinale next year! Here's hoping.

Someone made a comment about the lack of worth in film festivals to you I say, try applying for funding without a festival credit. They are worth it for that alone.

Dazed and Confused is another I love that no one seems to mention much. Possibly Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey's best roles.

Aye, I enjoyed that a lot. A 70s stoner-style follow-up to American Graffitti, if you like.

That reminds me, I must watch American Grafitti. I picked it up for a couple of quid in Sainsbury's along with The Thin Red Line but I'd forgot all about it.

Two quality films there. Canny different like :)

Yeah a perfect Saturday night double bill. I've already seen TTRL like and I'm not sure about it, bit's are definitely class but I seem to remember finding it a bit lacking in structure. Remembered it looks fantastic though and thought it's worth another go for a couple of quid.
